Busy Bee

An opportunity came up for me to grab a week in the studio.
I've enjoyed working on a couple more pieces for my upcoming solo exhibition.
also captured a few shots of the flowering ginger
and it's visitor
while myself and the bee were busy
my studio companion had a more idle time happily sending up ZZZs
while I happily cut, sewed, printed or painted
around her

a little surprise

When you embark on the blog & emerging artist journey you often wonder if your thoughts and ideas are being seen and/or enjoyed so very exciting when Sue Dennis an artist who's work I enjoy and admire, nominated my blog for the Liebster Blog award - Thankyou Sue

As part of the Liebster Blog award tradition it is passed along to 5 bloggers that have motivated and inspired.
To accept the award you must:
1. Link back to the person who gave it to you and thank them.
2. Post the award to your blog.
3. Give the award to 5 bloggers with less than 200 followers that you appreciate and value.
4. Leave a comment on the 5 blogs to let them know that they have been offered this award.

I enjoy many blogs and find them all very inspiring for many different reasons so choosing just five is a challenge in its' self. In no particular order the blogs I enjoy following are:  Wabisabiart by Noela Mills - I've had the privilege of participating in a couple of workshops by Noela and enjoy her insights and many talents. Angelia's Art Journals by Angelia Thompson - not only do I enjoy Angelia's willingness to share ideas and techniques I also enjoy her music playlists. Pen and Think by Lynnette Shelley - I discovered Lynnette's work through the Redbubble community, Art with a Needle by Kathleen Loomis & like Sue I also enjoy Kate's blog with her discoveries and insights into our hometown that is Brisbane.

SAQA - Brisbane gathering

Had a very enjoyable evening last Friday night, with a few SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) members.
L-R Lisa Walton, Ali George, Brenda Gael Smith, Sue Dennis, me & Felicity Clarke
Lots of creative talk, including the Studio Blog Hop that will start on the 1st of May - love seeing peoples studio spaces and where all their wonderful pieces are created. I'll be popping the links on my blog.
Lisa and Ali are the current Oceania reps for SAQA.

in the paper

Had a little feature in our local newspaper South West News in the lead up to the Beneath the Southern Sky Exhibition being on display last weekend at the Brisbane Craft and Sewing Show
The article was part of the weekly section of the paper called 'Anything but work'.

exploring and learning through playtime

paper, gesso, pencil, colored pencil, acrylic paint, oil pastels, texture paste
A busy couple of weeks at the moment so grabbing the opportunity to create a few play pieces using products/techniques that I wouldn't normally be comfortable using. The boundaries I give myself are enjoy the process, work small and let it evolve. It's all about the exploring and learning.
ink jet printed visoflex, paper, gesso, tissue paper, acrylic paint, oil pastels
Enjoyed some ink jet printing onto visoflex in the above piece. Plan to keep going with this one. And I finally got around to using the Expandable Paint by Pebeo that I bought a few weeks back, had quite a few practice runs working with the expandable paint before I finally started to get the hang of how it works.
paper, expandable paint, acrylic paint, shellac, stitch, cracker toy
Totally enjoy creative playing - very inspiring & motivating

getting up close

enjoying the new macro lens
a new perspective to the weed that has gone to seed
can even appreciate a normally unwanted pest

Very excited to have received an email during the week to let me know that my piece "Platforms #2" has been selected into 'State of the Art (SOTA) 12' which is an annual juror-ed exhibition. This years juror was the talented Sharon Hall. The exhibition will have it's premiere showing at Gallery 159, 14th - 23rd April 2012. The collection will then tour for about 12 months. I've now added an exhibitions page to my blog listing current and upcoming exhibitions/displays which I've had work selected for.  The page will be up-dated from time to time as new opportunities evolve. As the next tour spots are announced for the SOTA exhibition I'll also add these to the page.

Also here's a link to the very talented calligraphy, lettering and textile artist Tricia Smout. I so enjoyed exhibiting with Tricia last year with our 'Undercurrents' exhibition. And Tricia has been successful with her application for a 12 month Artist-in-Residence at Brisbane's Botanic Gardens - Mt Coot-tha.
Tricia has started a blog to document her journey throughout the residency and also to keep people informed of upcoming workshops etc. I've also got a link to Tricia's blog in my blog list.
